The Flaming Lips

the flaming lips – she’s a black belt in karate

“Mystical mornings of love and deception
Hearts wrapped in metal for peace and protection
Let corporate ready rock shows
Lay six feet under and curled at the toes” – Ryan Cox

“The Flaming Lips” – A Circus Mind

The final four lines refer to the many themes of the Lips’ lyrics including deeply melancholy ponderings about love, mortality, artificial emotion, pacifism, and deception. It also frames their famously raucous live shows which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections, complex stage light configurations, giant hands, large amounts of confetti, and frontman Wayne Coyne’s signature man-sized plastic bubble, in which he traverses the audience.

flaming lips – you think you’re radical

“100,000 finger tips holding the feet of the lips
Surrounded by lasers and the smoke of pyrotechnics
All the stops with whistles and bells
Rolling through crowds in rock cathedrals” – Ryan Cox

“The Flaming Lips” – A Circus Mind

Again, referencing Wayne’s famous entry in to the many rock and roll parks of this great land from Chicago to Austin to Palm Springs stepping on the heads and hands of the Lips fans separated from their god by a plastic bubble where fireworks and confetti initiate the communion of saints and prayer and the holy sacrament pierces the ears of youth where only singing, sweat, laughter, drinking, and drugs cleanse the thoughts of our corporate hearts and consumerism.

“Oklahoma’s great psych rockers
Penetrating wide screens, posing for cameras
A mind altering experience exploding fantastic
Arriving from space trapped in plastic” – Ryan Cox

“The Flaming Lips” – A Circus Mind

The introductory lines to the Flaming Lips refer to their much beloved home court of red dirt Oklahoma, their lights, lazers, skeletons, elfs, santas, popping confetti of weirdness stage show, and of course gray curled Wayne’s legendary entrance to the rock n roll arena, “trapped in plastic.” As the Lips like to send you to the moon, enjoy a little Flight Test.

The next entry from the book A Circus Mind focuses on the band The Flaming Lips. The Lips are a psychedelic rock band from Oklahoma City, OK. They are known for their elaborate live shows, rich layered sounds, and lyrical freak outs. And from the couple of times that I have seen them, I think the lead singer, Wayne Coyne, might hold the rock n roll record for calling the members of the audience “mother fuckers.” Which makes me feel like a special child of god, so check these mother fuckers out!
